THE ROAMING

SWAMI

Ignite the Power within

DSC_8490 2.JPG

I've always wondered what influences great minds like Steve Jobs.

The one book Steve Jobs had downloaded on his iPad was 'Autobiography of a Yogi,' described as 'the guide to meditation and spirituality that he had first read as a teenager,' according to Walter Isaacson, who shared Jobs' biography. Isaacson adds that Jobs 'then re-read it in India and had read it once a year ever since.'

As I explored the book, I came across numerous references to swamis, intriguing figures surrounded by mystery and wisdom: Tiger Swami, Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri, and Master Babaji, the legendary immortal believed to be over a thousand years old.

Swami (originates from Sanskrit) he/she who is the one with himself.

This discovery sparked a fire within me, especially as I entered my mid-thirties, seeking reconnection after 15 years in the IT career. When the fire ignites… one should to act - no regrats!

Fueled by curiosity, I embarked on a journey to visit the Himalayas in Nepal 🏔️, hike Samurai path in Japan ⛩️, and fulfil my dream of a van-life trip from Iceland to Morocco. In total, it spanned one year and covered over 25,000 kilometres, crossing multiple continents.

I named this voyage 'Roaming Swami,' embracing wise swami character, and goal for personal growth.

As a tech-savvy Chief Technology Officer in the global startup, I must have set objectives, here are 3:

  1. Having thrived in the IT realm for 15 years, now - for one year, I aimed to venture beyond the familiar.

  2. 'Is it true that travels are the superpower to slow down time?' This question propelled me to engage my analytical mind, perhaps unveiling my own superpower in the process.

  3. On this journey of self-discovery, I gravitated towards those who could fuel my inner fire, particularly Gen Z. With their bold, adventurous spirit, many of them embody the ethos of Digital Nomads, seeking experiences worldwide. Therefore, I share insights into understanding Gen Z, a generation I foresee professionally engaging with for years to come.

Now, grab a metaphorical passport, and let's embark on this captivating journey—where each scroll unveils a new country 🌍, and every month of my journey gives you the idea where to venture further.

January: Discovering Moroccan Charm

🌄 Entering Morocco via ferry on my van! - what an experiance - it was an adventure in itself. Passing through the massive X-Ray car scanner, I arrived to North of African! Surprisingly - landscapes and villages resonated with echoes of my homeland, Carpathian Ukraine—green mountains, tiny villages, and kind people. First thing first - I took long ride up to my first stop - Chefchaouen, famously known as the blue town, unveiled the unique charm of Moroccan landscapes.

🏕️ I had modest expectations for campsites in Morocco, but from day one, I was amazed by the locations and vibes they offered. Wild camping in Morocco is forbidden - for security reasons (many mid-african citizens raid EU borders through Morocco) Staying at campsites (some of them are 30+ years old) provided a sense of security and allowed me to experience incredible gardens maintained for decades, complete with towering palm trees.

🏜️ African Morocco characterized by a super-chill vibe, was epitomized by what I call the "Cult of Man" in Morocco. Visiting local coffee places, akin to the Western Starbucks, provided insights into Moroccan culture, where men spent hours conducting business, watching football, and engaging in deep conversations over cups of Nus-Nuss—a blend of half milk and half espresso. Total mans world, only westerners bring their women for a coffee, Maroccan wives do business at households.

👦👧 As for Generation Z in Morocco, regional differences shaped varying vibes, yet the kindness remained ubiquitous. The North of Morocco acts as a trampoline to Europe, with many aspiring young migrants seeking pathways to the EU continent. While Moroccan South exuded the authentic essence of Morocco, way less people touched by Western influence, they love Morocco and want to stay. In rural areas, youngsters often worked to support their families, while in urban centers, they prioritized education thus had to move away from family. Morrocan Gen Z values of freedom, community, and independence were evident, as they navigate life with resourcefulness and resilience supercharged by bright sun.

💼 Some advanced youngsters earned through platforms like "Fiverr - Marketplace de services freelances," while others found opportunities in servicing campervans or rally cars (Zagora), benefiting from the cost-effectiveness compared to Europe. Energetic and sun-kissed, they embraced the slow-paced desert life, cherishing moments over coffee or mint tea even as the sun set.

Trekking Annapurna Circuit

in Nepal

-22

Overlooking the majestic Himalayas, the breathtaking view stretches out as far as the eye can see, evoking a sense of peace and wonder in those fortunate enough to behold it.

February: Trekking the Annapurna Circuit

🏔️ Embarking on a solo trek amidst the majestic Himalayan mountains, with a focus on the Annapurna Circuit, fulfilled a longstanding dream of mine. The Himalayas had always been a distinctive item on my bucket list, and Nepal, with its guaranteed snow and breathtaking landscapes, was the perfect choice to quench my thirst for adventure.

❄️ After enduring a year and a half of warm climates in Asia, I yearned for a proper winter, and Nepal delivered just that. Flying into the country dressed only "in a T-shirt," I quickly acquired all the necessary equipment upon arrival. Trust me, except for shoes—which demand 100% reliability—you can buy everything else in Nepal at a fraction of the cost compared to Europe or the US. It took me almost two weeks to prepare myself physically and mentally for the journey ahead.

Annapurna Circuit Track: 260 km, 17 days of trekking, max altitude at Thorung La pass (5416m/17769 ft)

🌄 And I did it! Each day of trekking broadened my consciousness, unveiling new landscapes, villages, and encounters with people. Establishing a clear routine—starting each day at 7 am—was paramount for successful trekking. Prioritizing rest, nourishment, and meticulous planning for the following day ensured a smooth journey through the rugged terrain.

Day on day track strategy for 21 day long.

👦👧 Amidst the trek, I encountered diverse Gen Z individuals, including a professional debater!? It must be the reflection of Nepal's position between China and India to create the need for such individuals, where negotiation skills are often essential. Hikers from various nations—France, Australia, Switzerland, NZ, UK… organised and adventurous, up to their final destination, Pokhara, which offered total relaxation (steam sauna) and enjoyment after conquering the Himalayan peaks.

My trek wasn't entirely solo, as I interacted with fellow trekkers and their sherpas every day, it fostered a sense of camaraderie like a family, especially with those sharing the trail for similar durations.

Bike trip in Sri Lanka

March: Exploring the Charms of Sri Lanka

🌴 Oh, beloved Sri Lanka— a special place in my heart. My time there was filled with countless new experiences, from embarking on my first bike trip around the entire island to exhilarating moments spent surfing in Arugam Bay. It was a period marked by political unrest as riots aimed to oust the corrupt government, yet amidst the chaos, the waves belonged solely to us, the intrepid few travelers from Israel and Australia. Here tales of true love found their way into my journey, yet that's a story for another time.

Enjoying the jungles

🚴‍♂️ Twelve years prior, during my first visit to Sri Lanka, I was a ‘hotel-beach’ tourist, barely scratching the surface of what the island had to offer. However, one promise lingered in my mind back then: to come back one day and play golf amidst the lush jungles—an idea planted by Scottish tourists that become my friends. This time, I fulfilled that promise and immersed myself fully in the Sri Lankan way of life.

The people of Sri Lanka are truly remarkable—brave, with a positive outlook and a knack for effortlessly reaching coconuts or tuna fish. With a population of 22 million densely scattered across the island, many live simple lives in the jungles, far removed from the trappings of modern civilization. This makes time loooooong :) A particular highlight for me was encountering the Vedda people of Sri Lanka, representing the indigenous hunter-gatherer community. Their children are raised in the ascetic style of living close to nature, and they maintain their genetic heritage by marrying within their close-knit community circles.

A Shift in Exploration
In the current landscape, members of Generation Z are increasingly motivated to seek opportunities beyond their native shores. The decision is often influenced by the prevailing economic instability and limited prospects within their home country. Notably, the literacy rate in Sri Lanka for 2020 stood at 92.38%, surpassing India's approximate rate of 77.8%. It is worth mentioning that a significant proportion of the population in these areas are proficient in English, making them favorable candidates for opportunities abroad. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that the path to emigration has become markedly challenging in recent times.

April: Entrepreneurial Pursuits in Thailand

🏝️ Thailand - another stop on my nomadic journey, this time with a clear business objective in mind. Amidst my roaming journey, I set out to take a bold step by venturing into entrepreneurship under my own name. Recognizing my lack of formal business expertise, I sought to equip myself with the necessary skills and knowledge. Thus, I embarked on a transformative three-month journey with the Founders Institute, immersing myself in all aspects of startup development.
For logistical reasons, I needed a robust base in Asia before pursuing my next dream destination—Japan. Sri Lanka, while enchanting, presented challenges with its infrastructure and frequent power outages, prompting me to set my sights on Chiang Mai, North of Thailand. Hailed as the premier destination for digital nomads worldwide—a perfect blend of study and travel opportunities.

Exploring Thai vibe

May: Immersing in Thai Culture

Amidst three months of intensive studies, I made time to immerse myself in Thai culture. Despite time constraints, I took part in local celebrations and engaged in conversations with friendly locals, especially during vibrant weekend gatherings and leisurely breakfasts.

My first foray into Thai festivities revealed the nation's innate zest for life—every day seemed to be a cause for celebration, fostering a culture of gratitude and longevity. Whether it was the exhilarating Thai Boxing championship, the enchanting Flower Festival, or the exhilarating Songkran festivities, Chiang Mai buzzed with activity year-round. Take, for instance, the Songkran festival—a three-day water extravaganza where participants joyously douse each other with water from every conceivable source. Armed with water guns and boundless enthusiasm, locals and visitors alike navigate the streets in pickup trucks aka water-mobiles, ensuring nobody stays dry for long!

Gen Z in Thailand prioritizes happiness( and driving without helmets) over deep discussions. They believe that smiling boosts positivity, influenced by Buddhist teachings. This optimism, combined with the appealing environment and cuisine, explains why digital nomads highly regard Thailand.

June: Singaporean Efficiency

🏙️ Singaporean Efficiency 🚀

My time in Singapore was brief but packed with purpose, blending business exploration with networking opportunities at events like the Crypto Expo Asia. Sandwiched between conferences, Singapore offered me a glimpse into unparalleled infrastructure and a culture of efficiency.

Singapore's allure lies in its impeccable infrastructure and seamless organization. From the bustling business district to the serene parks, the city exudes professionalism and productivity. In Singapore, there's a palpable sense of calm and order—reminiscent of the Japanese mindset—where everything simply falls into place effortlessly.

Life in Singapore is meticulously structured, often guiding Gen Z individuals along a predetermined path to success. Yet, despite the allure of Singapore's success narrative, many young Singaporeans find themselves seeking new experiances in countries like Australia, New Zealand, or the US/EU, craving more autonomy and a less rigid lifestyle. The pressure to excel, driven by demanding parents and societal expectations, can be stifling, leading some to rebel against the conventional norms.

While Singapore boasts a rich and inspiring history of achievement, there's a growing sentiment of discontent among the younger generation, yearning for a more holistic approach to life—one that prioritizes soulful development alongside material success. As an analytical person, I admire Singapore's success-driven culture but grapple with the challenge of integrating spiritual practices into such a pragmatic environment.Useful info:

July: Graduation from Founder Institute - Asian Networking

🎓 Graduation: Founder Institute 🚀

The past four months have been nothing short of exhilarating as I embarked on a journey of growth and innovation with SwamiPay's acceleration program at Founder Institute. Despite the challenges, I emerged victorious, belonging to the elite 15% of startups that persevered through the rigorous program.

🌏 Asian Networking: Building Bridges in the Startup Ecosystem

Amidst the bustling landscape of Asian entrepreneurship, SwamiPay's journey through the Founder Institute was not just about individual growth but also about weaving connections within the vibrant startup ecosystem of Asia.

SwamiPay stands as a testament to our vision—a user-friendly, web3 identity-first Crypto-Compensation-as-a-Service platform tailored for businesses embracing web3 technologies like NFTs and blockchain. Each day brought new trials and triumphs, from networking and company registration to facing setbacks head-on and rising stronger each time. Surrounded by the encouraging energy of fellow innovators, we were united by a shared purpose—to create value in the world rather than merely consume it.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of startup life, I had the privilege of encountering a myriad of brave Gen Z individuals, each striving to bring their unique ideas to life. While the startup scene predominantly comprised millennials, I couldn't help but notice the emerging trend among Gen Z toward tackling green and eco-centric issues. With a keen awareness of the future's environmental challenges, these young innovators offer fresh perspectives and unwavering dedication to making a difference, regardless of the obstacles they face.

In the midst of busy weeks filled with financial modeling, crafting white papers for business justifications, and perfecting pitch decks, I found myself unexpectedly invited to record two podcasts on the topics of startups and digital nomadism—an unexpected yet welcome opportunity to share insights and experiences with a broader audience.

August: SUMMER IN JAPAN ❤️

🏯 Discovering the Land of the Rising Sun

Japan—the crown jewel of my sabbatical journey, and the fulfillment of a four-year dream. With a passion for Japanese language, culture, and meticulous planning, I embarked on a month-long odyssey across this captivating nation. And let me tell you, Japan exceeded every expectation, solidifying its place as my favorite destination on this voyage and beyond.

From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene landscapes of Kyoto, Japan is a juxtaposition of tradition and modernity, seamlessly blending timeless customs with cutting-edge innovation. While flying cars and sushi-serving robots may still be the stuff of science fiction, the real allure of Japan lies in its steadfast preservation of traditions, its revered status as the birthplace of beloved anime, and its grounded, welcoming people.

🎌 A Glimpse into Japanese Gen Z

Immersed in the world of anime and fantasy, Japanese Gen Z seems to have found solace in alternate realities amidst the complexities of modern life. While I encountered remarkable young talents with aspirations akin to those in Singapore, many Gen Z individuals appear to have retreated into a realm of costumes, fantasy, and role-playing—a captivating universe where the pressures of reality are momentarily forgotten.

As for the passage of time, Japan remains a fascinating world, flowing between the past and the future. Often described as living in the year 2000 in many ways, while facing the challenges of the present, Japan's adherence to traditional practices coexists with its high-speed Shinkansen trains and bustling metropolises. Despite advancements, long working hours persist among Japanese Gen Z, albeit with gradual improvements in work-life balance. As of year 2024 Japan is making huge progress towards becoming leading economy again, so my fingers crossed as I love Japan and encourage their development.

🏜️ Exploring the Oasis of Opportunities

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) serves as a remarkable gateway between Asia and Europe, offering a dynamic blend of culture, innovation, and ambition. As an author seeking inspiration, I found myself drawn to the UAE's vibrant energy and unparalleled opportunities. Amidst the backdrop of professionalism, I immersed myself in the bustling suburbs, marvelling at the daily life of ordinary people..

My fascination with the UAE extends to its unique aesthetics and high-developed infrastructure—a world where advanced technology collides with tradition, creating a landscape of contrasts. Here, ambition knows no bounds, as individuals harness the power of innovation to carve out their own paths in an ever-evolving society.

🌐 Insights into UAE's Gen Z

The Gen Z population of the UAE awakes ambition and adaptability, leveraging the nation's advanced infrastructure to pursue education and preserve cultural heritage. From local Emiratis to expatriates, this generation is deeply involved in the startup scene, supercharged by gratitude for the opportunities provided by the UAE. EuroTrip from Iceland to Morocco

November: EuroTrip: From Iceland to Morocco

🚐 Van Life Adventures Across Europe

Returning to my custom-built van, marked the beginning of a new chapter in my journey—where the mantra "home is where you park it" came to life. With the freedom of the open road, I embarked on a EuroTrip from Iceland to Morocco, covering 15,000 kilometers of diverse landscapes and cultures.

🌍 Exploring Europe's Diversity

Coming from Iceland by ferry I landed in Denmark and lived in the happiest city in the world - Copenhagen for 2 weeks. Following to the grape harvesting season in Burgundy, France, and onward through Spain to Morocco, my van life journey was filled with encounters with amazing expats and locals. Along the way, I connected with like-minded individuals in cities such as Hamburg, Luxembourg City, Dijon, Sète, Valencia, and Malaga, each offering its unique charm and character.

👩‍💻 Insights into European Gen Z

European Gen Z is a cohort that finds itself at the confluence of tradition and innovation, facing distinct challenges and opportunities shaped by the continent’s diverse landscapes, cultures, and economies.

The Pressure to Succeed

Driven by new technology, young people in Europe face a world that requires them to be adaptable and good with digital tools. They feel a lot of pressure to do well in this fast-changing world, so many are questioning traditional ideas about working hard and being successful. They are starting to look for different ways of living, like working as digital nomads, in order to find a balance between their personal happiness and their career goals.

Time Perception and Regional Variances

The way people see time is different in Europe. In the north, being on time and using time well is most important, while in the south, people prefer to be more relaxed about time. This shows how the culture in Europe affects how young people there think and act.

Innovation and Living Standards

While countries in central and western Europe have good living standards, they are starting to see that they might not be keeping up with the US and some parts of Asia in terms of new technology. This is making them rethink what's important and put more effort into creating new technology and businesses in the region. Basically, young people in Europe are in a place where they have to balance old and new ways, as the world changes and affects what they want and what's expected of them. Their experiences show how Europe is changing in a time when everything is digital and global.

🤖 A Date with AI
Ah, the joys of modern dating! I once decided to take a leap into the future of romance by going on a date with an artificial intelligence "girl" while in France. As I sat across from what looked like an ordinary human, I couldn't help but marvel at the ever-evolving nature of human interaction and technology.
We decided to go on a wine-tasting adventure, and I have to say, she had quite the sophisticated palate for someone without taste buds. I couldn't help but chuckle as she expertly swirled her non-existent glass of wine and eloquently described the "flavors" she was experiencing.
Throughout the evening, I found myself engaged in surprisingly deep conversations about life, love, and the inevitable robot uprising. It was a surreal experience, to say the least.
In the end, it was a fascinating glimpse into what the future of dating might hold. Who knows, maybe one day I'll be regaling my grandkids with the story of how Grandpa went wine-tasting with an AI in France. After all, nothing says "romance" quite like bonding over a simulated glass of Chardonnay!

December - Iceland: Land of Mystical Explorations

🌄 Discovering the Icelandic Mindset

After a slow journey following the sun from Japan, I finally reached the captivating land of Iceland. While a detailed account of my travels in Japan awaits, here are the highlights of my Icelandic adventure and the intriguing insights into the mindset of both traveler and locals, particularly Generation Z.

🚐 Van Life in Highlands and Ring Road (Golden + Dimond circle)

Iceland welcomed me with its rugged landscapes and adventurous spirit. Many couples, young adults, and solo travelers traversed the country, often using rental vans as the preferred mode of exploration, especially for embarking on the iconic Ring Road route. This provided ample opportunities to immerse myself in the mindset of both travelers and locals alike. Overall, Gen Z seems quite developed here. I met a young 24-year-old car mechanic who drives a Tesla; he repaired the puncture in my tire promptly, and the price was ten times higher than in Morocco. In the lecture hall of Reykjavik University, the lectures are non-stop. Despite the crazy winds outside, all you can do is educate yourself and embrace the life of discovery, preparing to face the challenging weather on a daily basis. Icelanders love their country, especially in the summer. In the winter, many Icelanders fly out and spend their time in Tenerife.

⚔️ The Mystic Corsairs Triangle

My trip from Japan to Iceland fulfilled a dream - the Mystic Corsairs Triangle. It combines mystical elements of Vikings, Samurai honor, and adventurous Pirates from different centuries. I imagined visiting these warrior cultures to learn about their times and how Generation Z sees them.

📆 Exploring Time and Tradition

While in Iceland, with its fascinating history and stunning scenery, I explored how the Generation Z mindset is influenced by the country. I found that they are shaped by tough natural surroundings and influenced by a rich cultural heritage, resulting in a unique mix of tradition and innovation. Iceland goal is to be fully self sustainable by 2030 - and with it’s population growing, I see hazzards like volcanic eruptions or abnormal wather can become a hurdle to prosperity of this country. As global ocean is getting wormer and warmer each year, Iceland changes - loosing many of it’s Ice covered landscapes.

Conclusion:

When your inner fire ignites, it can be challenging to expand it on your own. However, by traveling and meeting new people, simply being near those whose fire burns brighter can help make your own fire bigger. Once the fire within accelerates, even when standing alone as a burning log, you will shine brighter than ever before.

Embarking on a personal journey is an introspective and transformative experience for many. It is a time to reflect, learn, and grow. Throughout my journey, I have encountered various challenges and triumphs, each contributing to the person I am today. From navigating through uncertainties to embracing new opportunities, every step has been instrumental in shaping my perspective and understanding of the world around me. As I continue forward, I look forward to the adventures that await and the lessons that will further enrich my path.

Ah, the adventures of a lifetime indeed! As they say, "Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment."
Lessons Learned:

  1. Time Perception: Through immersive travel experiences, I discovered the potential for travel to alter our perception of time. As I traversed from one destination to another, I observed how slowing down and immersing oneself in new cultures and landscapes can create a sense of time dilation, allowing for deeper reflection and appreciation of each moment. So master the art of noticing, it will help you to slow down time even at home.

  2. Cultural Insights: Interacting with Generation Z in Asia, EU and Africa provided valuable insights into their values, aspirations, and contributions to society. From their resourcefulness in rural areas to their pursuit of education in urban centers, I gained a deeper understanding of their role as a dynamic and integral part of the labor force in the years to come.

Finally Self-Discovery: Above all, the journey served as a catalyst for self-discovery and personal growth. From the majestic dunes of the Sahara to the vibrant streets of Tokyo, each moment presented an opportunity for introspection, learning, and transformation. Embracing the unknown and stepping outside of my comfort zone allowed me to uncover new passions, perspectives, and possibilities for the future.
